Acid and Alkaline–How Foods Balance The Body

July 27th, 2009

grace-and-andy-0173

Foods balance the body and are considered either acid or alkaline depending on their reaction to the digestive process.   The acid/alkaline balance is important to health.

Scientists know that disease flourishes in an acid environment.

We have many food choices in America. Unfortunately, the choices we make contribute to a high rate of acid body chemistry and leads to disease.

We are told to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and to avoid eating processed foods.

Fruits and vegetables produce an alkaline environment in the body.

Alkaline foods help maintain a body chemistry which leads to prevention and optimal health.

Acid producing foods lead to many of the diseases plaguing our society.

Cells in the body start to die when the blood becomes  acidic. Cancer cells survive and grow in an acid condition and feed off the waste of normal cells.

A diet providing the best protection from inflammation, early aging and disease should have a ratio of four parts alkaline to 1 part acid.  Eating lots of fruits and veggies is vital.

Here are some of the foods that produce acid: animal products…red meat, dairy products, sugar, white flour, processed, refined and fast foods; deep fried foods, chocolate :( , artificial sweeteners, alcohol, and food additives.

This is only a partial list.  Here are other considerations that produce an acid environment:  medications, drugs, emotional upsets and stress.

Foods that produce an alkaline blood chemistry: Most fruits and vegetables, some raw nuts and most seeds. Sprouted grains and sprouted legumes.

How are you doing?  If you are eating the standard American diet, there is much room for improvement.

Improve the diet, cut the disease rate and improve the quality of life.

AGE Proteins….What Are They?

July 17th, 2009

grace-and-andy-0171

AGE Proteins are an accumulation of cellular sludge.  AGE stands for Advanced Glycation End products.  AGE proteins are formed in the cells as a natural metabolic process of taking in nutrients and getting rid of waste products.

The AGE particles are clumps of proteins.

Conditions such as high sugar intake, blood sugar problems and the aging process generate a greater amount of AGE proteins.

As these proteins clump together in the cells, they act like sludge and simply clog up the cells and prevent normal cellular activities.

AGE particles can also get into the bloodstream.

One of the favorite things Americans like to do is Bar-B-Q their meat.  When  meat is cooked at high temperatures, the AGE particles are formed from the meat protein and when eaten, they go into the bloodstream.

Our kidneys get rid of most of the particles when we are young, but as we get older…30’s to 40’s…or if we have kidney disease, they accumulate in the blood stream.

This then leads to chronic inflammation and all the diseases related to inflammation.

What can you do?  Keep your blood sugar levels under control and be sure to have plenty of anti-oxidants in your diet.

Change how you cook your meat.  The higher the temperatures and the less water used in cooking, the more these AGE proteins are formed.

Cut out the frying, the grilling or broiling of your meat. The AGE proteins will be lower when you boil, steam or slow cook your meat.  Get out the crock pot.

I use and recommend SHAKEE’S VIVIX, the only anti-aging supplement that has been shown to slow AGE protein formation.  It is 10 times more effective than resveratrol alone.

Lower Blood Vitamin D Level Associated With Metabolic Syndrome

July 10th, 2009

Research supported by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., shows that a lower blood vitamin D level is associated with metabolic syndrome and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The study results were presented at the National Lipid Association Annual Scientific Sessions in Miami, Florida and suggest an important role of vitamin D nutrition for maintaining cardiovascular health.

In this study, intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements was strongly linked with vitamin D levels in the blood.  The greater the intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements, the higher the amount of vitamin D found in the blood.

More importantly, as vitamin D intakes increased, HDL cholesterol (or “good cholesterol”) levels increased as well.  Future research is needed to determine if vitamin D from dietary supplements can lower risk levels for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

“Our next study, which is already underway, is intended to confirm causality by showing that vitamin D supplementation improves cardiovascular risk factors,” says Dr. Jamie McManus M.D., Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education, Shaklee Corporation.

Kevin C. Maki, PhD, the study’s Principal Investigator and the Chief Science Officer of Provident Clinical Research, Glen Ellyn, IL, says, “Results from population studies suggest that a low serum vitamin D concentration is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, but this is the first study to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular risk factors in a group that includes a large number of vitamin D supplement users.”  He continues, “Additional research is warranted to assess whether increasing vitamin D intake will improve the metabolic cardiovascular risk factor profile.”

Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Parade

July 8th, 2009

grace-and-andy-0191

The morning of July 4, 2009, dawned with clear blue skies, a perfect day for a parade.  We arose early to be at our posts for the annual Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Parade.

Entries began arriving around 7:30 AM.  Armed with our clip boards and dressed in our blue Chamber of Commerce volunteer shirts, we were ready for the masses of people.

We directed people to their assigned locations, answered questions and lined up the entries.  There were 105 with over 1000 people participating.

The Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce parade is a hometown event.  Participants range from little children, to politicians, to local businesses and clubs.  There are veterans, cub scouts and Native Americans.

There is not space to show all the pictures or mention all who participated.  The parade started with a Flagstaff Police car leading the way.   As our group entered the parade from a side street, we walked along with them.

Our assignment was to make sure candy was not thrown at the public, but could be handed out.  The kids were ready with their bags.

People come from all over to watch this parade, many from out-of-town and out-of-state.  Some say this is the best parade and they look forward to it each year.

Enjoy a taste of Flagstaff.

Independence Day….Fourth of July

July 3rd, 2009

grace-and-andy-017

Flags waving, parades, fireworks, picnics and baseball are ways we celebrate Independence Day.  We like to show our patriotism.

How many know at what cost we obtained the freedoms we enjoy?

In the 1770’s our country was at war with the British.  We wanted our freedom to establish a new and independent nation, not one ruled by Mother Britain in a far away land.

A few good, brave men came together to declare our independence.  They wrote a resolution that was introduced to the Continental Congress on June 17, 1776.

Headed by Thomas Jefferson, a willing committee worked very hard to polish up a formal writing for the grand announcement of independence.

The resolution was approved on July 2, but the actual Declaration of Independence, a separate document, was adopted on July 4, 1776.

There were 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence.  These men were of substantial means. They signed the document and pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to their new country.

They signed knowing full well if they were found out and captured they would be put to death.

It cost some their lives, others lost everything they had, including wives and children.  Some were captured and tortured before they died.

Vandals looted some of their homes.  Family members were put in prison. Others had family members who simply vanished.

Others had their businesses and properties taken from them and died in poverty.

Some  take our liberties for granted. We shouldn’t. The liberties we have were won at a great cost of human lives and sacrifices.

As we celebrate our Country’s Birthday this 4th of July, pledge to do your part to keep our county free.

Don’t stand by and do nothing as politicians raise their hands to preserve and protect our constitution and liberties then go about destroying them for their own self interests and power.

Now more than ever, we need men and women of honor and integrity like those who signed the Declaration of Independence.  There are very few to be found in the hollowed halls of our government.

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.  Be grateful to those who have gone before.

Our Family Reunion Pancakes

July 1st, 2009

Our family reunion pancakes are the best.  Those that saw my family grace-and-andy-019reunion blog post pictures on June 20 noticed our grandson cooking pancakes.

These are not ordinary pancakes.  Since my husband and I are in charge of breakfast at our family reunions, we make special pancakes.

A few years ago, one of the relatives asked why ours tasted different from the ones he made at home using the same mix.  He thought it might be because we were in the mountains and the pines.

I decided to share what makes our pancakes special.

I start with the base using a pancake mix that only requires water.

For a big group like our family, I pour the mix into a very large bowl…about half the bag of mix.

I add 6-8 eggs, about a half cup of oil, and a half box of cake mix, either white or yellow.

(I don’t measure, I just dump it in.  I cook like my mother.)

I then add enough water to make the pancakes thin enough to cook on the grill.  Mix it all together and cook on a hot grill.

At home for the two of us, I use one egg, 1-2 tablespoons of oil and 2-3 tablespoons of cake mix.

You don’t have to have exact measurements.  It all comes out good.

Enjoy!  Make them for your family this Fourth of July holiday weekend.
