We Wish You A Merry Christmas!

December 23rd, 2009

test video 003We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, the song rings in our ears.  We do wish for you a Merry Christmas and hope this next year is a prosperous one for all.

I finally broke down and bought a fake tree this year.  I love the smell of fresh cut trees.  Several of our trees were living trees and they now live in our yard.  They have gotten really big.

Having a tree in the house with a wood stove doesn’t make for a long lasting tree.  The needles are soon dropping to the floor and we could only enjoy the lights for a short time.  We didn’t want it to catch fire.

So the decision to get a fake one was made this year.  It really is nice keeping the lights on.test video 010

We have many Christmas symbols and the tree is one of them. The pure green color of the Christmas tree remains all year.  This shows the everlasting hope of mankind.  The needles point heavenward to remind us that our thoughts should turn toward heaven.

The candy cane represents the shepherds crook. The crook helps bring wandering sheep back to the flock.  It reminds us to show love because we are our brother’s keeper.

Lost sheep are found by the sound of a bell.  The bell rings for mankind to return to the fold.

We put bows on our presents to remind us of the spirit of the brotherhood of man.  As the bow is tied, it is with love and good feelings toward each other.

The symbol of the present reminds us that as we give gifts of love we remember the gifts the wisemen gave to the infant Jesus.

God promised a Savior for the world and gave us a bright new star that shone down from the heavens as fulfillment of that promise.

The wreath is round and represents the eternal nature of love.  It never ceases, stops, or ends.  It is one continuous round of affection.

We can enjoy the fun things of Christmas without forgetting what Christmas represents.  It represents the birth of Christ and His great love for us.  It gives us the opportunity to show our love for each other.

May your Christmas be filled with joy and love.

Our Christmas Tradition…Cinnamon Rolls

December 8th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017When our family was very young, we wanted to start our own family Christmas Traditions.  Two have stuck with us for over 40 years.  Cinnamon Rolls and decorated Christmas Cookies.

We have cinnamon rolls Christmas morning with hot chocolate.  The other part of the tradition is we share those cinnamon rolls with our close neighbors and friends.  There have been times when I’ve made up to 16 dozen rolls to share.

As Christmas nears, I make a list of who gets rolls.  My grown sons make sure they are on the list.  One neighbor has moved to a warmer climate for the winter but makes sure she comes back around Christmas to get her rolls.

When I first wanted to make these rolls, I asked my mother for the recipe.  She gave me the ingredients, in no particular order and with no instructions.  I had seen my mother make cinnamon rolls for as long as I could remember. Putting them together came very naturally.

I want to share with you my recipe and have included pictures.  I hope yours turn out as well as mine do.  As a matter of interest, this is a very old recipe and the cup of water was used to dissolve the yeast before adding to the mixture.  I still include the water.  I also use a large capacity Kitchen Aid Mixer with a dough hook.  If you don’t have a large mixer, half the recipe in two.

This recipe can also be used for doughnuts.

Cinnamon Rolls and Doughnut Dough

Mix together: 1 quart milk plus 1 cup water, warm in microwave…not hot.

                        5-6 tablespoons yeast  (I use 6)

                        1 cup sugar

Add:               1 cup butter

                        6 eggs, beaten

                        1 tablespoon vanilla extract

                        1 tablespoon lemon extract

                        1 teaspoon salt

                       12-13 cups flour

Add the yeast to the warm milk and water, then sugar.  Add the remaining ingredients. (I start with a mixing paddle and then switch to the kneading hook when the dough gets thick)  Mix well after each cup of flour until you get to about 10 cups.  Then add the flour ½ to ¼ cup at a time kneading well after each addition of flour.  You want the dough to be soft and just barely sticky.  Too much flour will make your rolls dry.  If you are making it in a mixer, knead for about 15 minutes after all flour is in.

Let the dough rise to double in size in a large bowl sprayed with cooking spray.  (Pam)  For Cinnamon Rolls, work with ½ the dough at a time. (Unless you’ve halved the recipe)  Roll dough out in a rectangular shape on counter sprayed with cooking spray.  Spread the dough with the following in this order:  Soft butter (use real butter in recipe for best results), sprinkle with cinnamon, light layer of brown sugar, sprinkle with raisins and nuts if desired.  (I use pecans)  Starting on the long side, roll dough into a long roll.  Cut into about 1 inch rolls.  Place on baking sheet lined with foil and sprayed with Pam.  Let raise about 15 – 20 minutes. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. Do not over cook.  You want them slightly brown, not dark.  Cinnamon rolls will continue to raise in the oven as they cook.  Frost while hot with icing made from powdered sugar, milk, and lemon extract. Make the icing thick and it melts into the rolls.  Makes about 4 dozen.

For doughnuts:  Roll dough out, cut with doughnut cutter, let raise, fry in hot oil, glaze with powder sugar, milk, and lemon extract icing.  Make it thin.

The trick to good cinnamon rolls and doughnuts is to not use too much flour or they get dry and hard.  You want the dough sticky but still able to handle without sticking to your fingers.

Mother said you can use this same recipe for bread rolls.  Reduce the sugar to about ½ cup and leave out the vanilla and lemon extracts.

Healthy Tips For Your Holiday Dinner

November 24th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017Thanksgiving dinner and other holiday meals don’t have to be unhealthy. Here are some healthy tips.

There are many ingredients in a Thanksgiving dinner that are healthy.  If prepared carefully, turkey can be a healthy, low-fat meat. Sweet potatoes, yams and pumpkin are loaded with vitamin A and other great nutrients.  Cranberries are a nutrition powerhouse.

Here are some tips to make your Thanksgiving meal one
that contributes to your health:

Don’t baste the turkey.  Cook it in a bag to seal in the moisture. Remove the skin before serving.

Refrigerate or add ice cubes to the turkey juices and skim off the hardened fat before  making the gravy.  Use a gravy cup that pours from the bottom to minimize the fat.

Bake the stuffing in the oven instead of in the turkey.  Use whole wheat bread, vegetables and fruits.  Add nuts and your favorite spices.

Bake your sweet potatoes or yams instead of candied and let your guests add butter to taste.

Skip the butter for your mashed potatoes. Use skim milk or buttermilk instead of whole milk.

By cooking your green vegetables with garlic, nuts and herbs instead of creamy or fat-laden sauces, you give the meal a gourmet appeal.

Serve your meal on smaller plates to help control portion sizes.  Even a second helping isn’t quite so damaging.

Use a meal replacement product for one or more meals before and after Thanksgiving.  The overall total caloric intake over the three day period will not be so excessive.

We use a wonderful meal replacement product.  Learn more about Cinch.

Are you getting the idea?  There are many little things you can do to make your holiday dinners healthier.

Here is a little verse. I don’t know who wrote it, enjoy!

May your stuffing be tasty,

May your turkey be plump…

May your potatoes ‘N’ gravy have nary a lump.

May your Yams be delicious,

May your pies take the prize,

May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The Anti-aging Promise of Resveratrol Is Real

November 16th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017The anti-aging promise of resveratrol is real.

The amount or resveratrol in most products on the market do not come close to the amounts used in research.

Resveratrol is considered key in protecting the body against heart disease, cancer and neurological diseases, according to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a neuroscience professor at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine.

According to him, it can prevent some infections, serve as an antiviral, reduce obesity, protect against some forms of diabetes and slow the effects of aging.

Resveratrol companies can refer to the mountains of published research, but what research has been done on THEIR resveratrol product and what are the findings?

Not all resveratrol products are created equally.

Is Stress Making You Sick?

November 6th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017Is Stress Making You Sick? It is very possible.  Stress affects the heart, weight, the skin and more.

Under stress, the heart beat increases and the heart has to work harder.  Blood thickens and clots more easily.  Blood clots that form when there is no wound, is not good.

The Immune System slows down substantially and you are more susceptible to illness, infection and degeneration,

Colon function is impaired, resulting in constipation, diarrhea, and gas produced by undigested food.  The digestive process turns off causing stomach upsets.

Adrenal secretions increase, pumping adrenalin into the blood stream to temporarily give you strength, speed, and stamina.

If you are being attacked by a bear, this needs to happen, but in everyday life, the “fight or flight” syndrome day in and day out takes a toll on your health.

Under stress, the skin may break out with acne, psoriasis, hives or rosacea.

Stress can change the balance of chemicals in the brain and narrow the blood vessels which may cause headaches.  Tension in the shoulders and neck may make them worse.

Things you can do to lessen stress are:

Identify what is stressful; talk with someone important to you; plan ahead; exercise; tackle problems 1-1; have a positive attitude; avoid alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, caffeine and sugar; know what you can and cannot change; Supplement your diet with nutrients that feed the cells.

The body manufactures 55,000 new cells every second!  Cells require protein, vitamins minerals and more.  Under stress these nutrients are used up extremely fast and must be replenished.

Our family uses quality nutritional supplements, one of which is Stress Relief Complex. I invite you to view a short video “The Shaklee Difference.“  There is a difference in supplements.

Spooky Foods

October 30th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017

With Halloween right around the corner, I thought I would write about “spooky” foods.  Spooky because they make you think you are eating healthy.  Spooky because they pretend to be something they are not and hope to pass themselves off as the real thing.

The first is pretzels.  I love them.  They are crunchy and salty, two favorites.  The package shouts “fat free,” always a warning flag.  What is in them to make them “spooky?”

They’re made from refined white flour which has been stripped of any nutritional benefits, such as vitamins and antioxidants.

They are packed with carbs and calories.

Have you eaten 24 slices of white bread in a sitting?  Well a 15-oz. bag of pretzels is like eating all that bread at one time.  Spooky!

Another “spooky” food disguised as healthy are spinach wraps.  They look good, taste good and you would think they are healthy.  Isn’t spinach healthy?

Spinach wraps contain only a scant amount of spinach powder, hardly enough to mention.  They get their green color from food colorings and are made from refined white flour.

Not too many good vitamins in this “spooky” food.  The A and C found in fresh spinach are gone from spinach wraps.  A typical wrap contains 170 calories.  One cup of cooked fresh spinach contains about 65 calories.   Spooky!

How about those blueberry scones you love so much?  Blueberries, how healthy could that be?  Sounds healthy to me.  How spooky could they be?

They are packed with over 400 calories and artery-clogging saturated fat, over half the maximum amount needed in an entire day.  They don’t even count as a serving of fruit and just try to find the fiber.   “Spooky.”

How spooky could water be?  Some water I’ve tasted is pretty bad.  This “spooky” water cost some bucks.  It is vitamin water.  Sure it’s loaded with some inexpensive vitamins, but it is also loaded with up to 200 calories per bottle.  It’s a great way to pack on the pounds if they are not burned off.

Purified water would be a better choice.

Have a safe Halloween and watch out for the spooks and goblins roaming around and especially watch out for the “spooky” foods masquerading as healthy.

In The Beginning: My Story

October 26th, 2009

(Speech I gave at “Meet the Masters” in Phoenix, AZ. Oct. 24, 2009)Grace And Andy 017

I would like to start with a story…

In the sweltering summers and bone-chilling winters, a farming man would look to his sons for the hands needed for planting and harvesting.  When the midwife delivered to his wife what had all the appearance of a stillborn child, it was a twice dealt blow.

The father would not accept the verdict that the child was lifeless, although as he looked at the shriveled infant he noted that it seemed no more than a tiny sack of skin and bones.  But he saddled his horse and rode three miles to the nearest doctors in practice, and brought back with him two physicians.

Their prognosis matched that of the blunt wording of the midwife.  The infant had barely any pulse; it was hopeless.  When the mother asked if she might nurse the child, it seemed the kindest thing to let her do, and the infant suckled and went into a deep sleep.

For weeks and even months, there were no palpable signs of improvement.  Neighboring women who came to call and to care for the mother, as was the custom, clucked sadly about the misfortune, for it was apparent to all that this frail creature could hardly hope to survive.

But they had not counted on one thing.  Giving all the energy that a healthy child might have converted to wriggling, bawling, exercising each of his limbs, the child lay in his crib performing just two functions.  He observed and he thought.  And when the room was still of voices and empty of the bustle of people, gradually, very gradually he practiced with great concentration, just curling up the fingers of one hand and then the other.  (Shaklee Survey, 1976)

As humans, we sometimes long to know where we came from, why we look the way we do, and act the way we do.  We search our family history looking for clues.

Just as we learn from our family history, we also learn from our Shaklee history and the heritage we have as Shaklee Members.

A small sample of Basic H given to me by a friend became a gift that keeps on giving.

As a young mother that small sample of Basic H introduced me to another way of living, a different way of thinking and a lifetime of sharing.

Learning about Vita Lea and Protein saved me from sleeping 24/7.  Taking nutritional supplements was weird at the time and I got lots of ribbing.  But I needed something, and Shaklee provided it.

I made a commitment at that time to use all the products and to never ever quit.

I was soon sharing with all my family and friends.  My parents were the first to hear about Shaklee.  I took a bottle of Basic H, a Vita Lea and a can of protein when I went to visit them.

I followed my mother around her kitchen telling her all the amazing things Basic H would do.  She never said a word.  I left the products with them.  A week later, they called and wanted more of that stuff.  In only one week they felt a difference taking the Vita Lea and protein.  Mother and Dad...70th Wedding Anniversay 002

Several years later I asked my mother why she used the products when she seemed so uninterested.  Because I was her daughter and she wanted to help me.  And help me she did.  She told everyone about them.  She had a great group of members and earned a bonus check every single month.

(Picture of my parents on 70th weddding anniversary)

She had a hereditary form of arthritis and the doctors had told her she would be in a wheel chair by the time she was 40.  It never happened.  She could still do the splits when she was 86.  We didn’t ask her to try after that.  Her favorite product was Alfalfa and she bought it by the case because she never wanted to be without it.

On a routine visit to her doctor, because of her age he suggested she use a drug to increase bone density.  She read the side-effects and then looked at him and said, “Why would anyone want to take this?  I’ll just go home and take more calcium.”

My dad is 96 and still living in his home.  He takes no meds, but calls and lets me know that he needs more of that stuff to help him live another 25 years.  And he is still earning bonus checks.

I have not made the millions that Al has, (Al Hegerman, Presidential Master Coordinator, earns more than $3,800 a day, 7 days a week )  but I should hit a million dollars in earnings within this next year.

There are thousands like me in Shaklee.  The money has been great, but more than the money, nothing could compensate for the healthier lives and a better quality of life for my parents and those I love.

Shaklee gave me the freedom to be a stay-at-home mom and now a stay-at-home grandma.

It paid for a two year church mission for our son, a national scout jamboree, modeling school and much more.

We’ve enjoyed expense paid trips, new cars and fun vacations.

My husband had two back surgeries within 9 months, and was told he could no longer work in his chosen field. For two years our bonus checks paid the house payment, the utilities and gas for the car.   Our Shaklee business has been a gift.

The child who laid in the crib thinking, observing and curling up his fingers was Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee. He left us a heritage of wonderful products and a philosophy to live by.

We bought into his philosophy of Living In Harmony with Nature.

Today, we have Roger Barnett, CEO and owner of Shaklee Corporation. He has a huge vision for Shaklee.  As Shaklee members, we are beginning to catch his vision of “Making a Difference” to millions of families and just as we bought into Dr. Shaklee, we are buying into Roger.  Under Roger’s leadership, Shaklee is growing and expanding around the world.

We have new products, new ideas, new technology and a POWERFUL COMPENSATION PLAN.

As Dr. Shaklee would say…”the heck with yesterday, what’s doing today?”

What is “doing today?”  For me it is….

ITrack, my blog, on-line newsletters, email with hot links, Shaklee University, web sites, videos, YouTube, conference calls and more.

We have Vivix, Vitalizer, NutriFeron and Cinch.  Get Clean and Enfuselle.

We are living in the information age. We have exciting tools and products.

Shaklee is on the move….if you’re not in, get in, if you are in, stay in.  Never, ever quit.

When I attended those first Shaklee meetings, I was clueless about the marketing plan.  I didn’t understand it.  Just like some of you may be feeling.

When Mary Ann and Ralph (my up-line business leaders) got their first car, the thought came to me, “They aren’t any smarter than me.  I can do that too.”  And I did.

And so can you.  Start where you are, do something each day, keep moving forward.  Dr. Shaklee would always tell us, don’t worry about the money, go out and help the other fellow.  The money will come.  And it did and it will.

And gradually, very gradually, the child in the crib, practiced curling up the fingers of one hand and then the other…..and like the child in the crib, Shaklee continues to grow. The company is the #1 Natural Nutrition Company in the U.S., and is reaching out and encircling the globe.  Become a part of it.

Protein Power

October 22nd, 2009

Grace And Andy 017

Protein is essential to all body tissues for growth, repair and maintenance. Protein is required for making enzymes, antibodies, hormones, and hydrochloric acid.

Protein power helps the body maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, provide energy and helps the body fight off disease. Proteins provide the building blocks of a cell’s structure needed for organs, blood, muscles, bone, connective tissue and essentially every part of the body.

Protein is the most abundant substance in the body, next to water.

By consuming adequate amounts of quality dietary protein, these powers are made possible. You get protein in a variety of lean meats, fish and poultry.  You also get it from soy, eggs and dairy.  These proteins supply the body with amino acids, the building blocks from which the body can make its own body proteins.

There are essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids.  Foods contain about 20 different ones and more than half of those are non-essential meaning the body can make them itself.

There are nine amino acids that are essential, meaning the body cannot make them and must get them from food.  The body needs these on a daily basis in order to make the non-essential amino acids.

If even one essential amino acid is missing or deficient, it can create a detrimental rippling effect that will be manifested anywhere in the body.

No new body tissue can be made without protein.  Consuming QUALITY protein can have positive effects on the body and play a part in the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, and osteoporosis.

Breakthroughs In Cancer Treatment

October 13th, 2009

Grace And Andy 017On September 20, 2009, Parade Magazine ran a story about dramatic breakthroughs in cancer treatment, by Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

There are environmental issues that are at the root of some cancers.  For example, 90 % of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking.  For other forms of cancer, the causes are not so clear.

Scientists now know, according to Dr. Collins, that cancer is a disease of DNA.  Smoking causes mutations of the DNA and when mutations occur, a normal cell grows out of control and spreads.

Not all mutations are caused by environmental issues.  Some cells do not replicate the exact DNA when dividing, thus causing what is called a “typo.”  If the “typo” continues to be replicated wrong, cancer can develop.

These “typos” can randomly occur or can be inherited.  There are numerous ways a cell can go wrong.

Physicians are starting to use the knowledge that cancer is a disease of DNA to look at a person’s DNA and their family history to predict their risk factors.  If cancer is caught early enough, it is usually treatable.

There are powerful new drugs being developed. But what if there was a natural substance or a product that would protect and repair DNA, would that be of interest to these scientists?  What about you?

In laboratory studies, Vivix Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic ingredients have been shown to impact the four mechanisms of cellular aging.* One of those mechanisms is DNA damage.

Everyday, every cell in the body is being bombarded by DNA-damaging assaults.  These assaults can damage the DNA and cause a “typo.”   Vivix ingredients help protect and repair cellular DNA.*
