Clinical Trials of Resveratrol Drug Stopped

May 31st, 2010 No comments

On May 4th, 2010, GlaxoSmithKline announced they were suspending a clinical trial of their resveratrol drug because of safety concerns.

Some reports went so far as to say people should be cautious about taking resveratrol supplements until the safety issues had been resolved.

This needs to be clarified.

The “resveratrol” drug referred to is not resveratrol itself!

Several years ago, Harvard scientists started screening over 500,000 chemicals to find which would be most effective at turning on anti-aging genes.

They were looking for something they could patent and sell to a drug company for big bucks.

What they found was resveratrol, a nutrient found naturally in red wine.  It was the most effective compound out of those 500,000 they screened at turning on the anti-aging genes.

It was great news for people using resveratrol supplements, but it was bad news for the scientists, because they couldn’t patent it and, therefore, couldn’t sell it to a drug company.

But all was not lost. There is a time-tested process for dealing with this problem.

It is to make a chemically modified derivative of the natural compound and, if it works, patent the chemical derivative and sell it to a drug company.

That’s what the scientists at Harvard did. They made a chemical derivative of resveratrol called SRT501.

This chemical showed it also turned on the anti-aging genes, patented it and sold it to Sirtris Pharmaceuticals for $500 million.

Then Sirtris turned around and sold it to GlaxoSmithKline for $720 million

The process of making a chemical derivative is frequently used.  Many successful drugs have been obtained this way, but the process is also fraught with perils.

Chemically modified derivatives are often not metabolized in the same way as the original and are often toxic in unexpected ways.

It is not surprising SRT501 displayed unexpected toxicity which caused
GlaxoSmithKline to halt clinical trials of the drug.

SRT501 is not resveratrol and the toxicities of this drug have nothing to do with resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a completely natural nutrient found in grapes, red wine and other foods. SRT501 is a man-made chemical derivative of resveratrol.

I Was Tempted…..

May 24th, 2010 No comments

I received a really good email newsletter this morning and I was tempted to send it out to my contacts.

It had all the makings of scandal and an element of truth.

The subject was about a well known fast food chain and problems it was having.

I quickly copied and pasted it to get it ready to email.

Then I stopped.  At the bottom of the email was a web site which was the source for the story. I decided to check it out.

It turned out the story was a farce.  It was an April Fool’s joke and now the chain is trying to do damage control.

It was a lesson to me to check sources and choose not to re-send.

That goes for those wonderful emails that say “send this to everyone in your address book,” or “send this to 10 people right now and all your wishes will be granted.”

I could go on, but the point is taken.

Could those emails have a tracking device on them and each time they are forwarded to friends and family, it only verifies it is a legitimate email address and Spammers then have good addresses to spam?

It doesn’t matter how cute those bunnies, kittens, puppies and other “cute” pictures are.  Do friends and family really want to see them for the umpteenth time?

I’ve received an email numerous times that shows a really horrific accident which could have been fatal but the occupants of the vehicle walked away.

It was supposed to be on Hwy. 100 near where I live.  There is no Hwy. 100 near where I live.  It had to be a “doctored” picture.

My motto now is ….check sources, do not forward emails no matter how good they are.  It could save me some time and misery.

Just Think About It…..

May 14th, 2010 No comments

None of us know what the future holds. No matter how secure we think we are financially, it can all disappear.

When a friend “bugged” the heck out of me to try a sample of Shaklee’s Basic H, I resisted for several months.  Finally I tried it and liked it.

As I learned about Shaklee, good health and “green” products, I shared with friends and family and soon I had “a little stream” of extra income coming in.

By default, I had a Plan B.  I never expected to ever really need it.  It was for fun times.

Then my husband  had two back surgeries within 9 months and was told he could no longer work in his chosen field. We scrambled.  Thankfully that “little stream of income” was there to pay the house payment and the utilities.

Watch this short video.

Start your Plan B before you need it.  We can help.

Just think about it…

Want extreme energy? Try Shaklee B-Complex!

New Reasons To Skip The Soda Fountain

April 29th, 2010 No comments

If you’re drinking soda — (especially from fast food) you want to read this.

A new study finds that soda fountains are crawling with bacteria. Not just any bacteria, but coliform bacteria.

Researchers tested 90 soda and water samples from 30 different fast food restaurants in Virginia’s Roanoke Valley.

In all, 70 percent tested positive for some form of bacteria–and many of them were resistant to one or more of 11 different antibiotics tested on them, according to the study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology.

The researchers found 48 percent tested positive for coliform, 17 percent tested positive for Chryseobacterium meningosepticum and 11 percent tested positive for E. coli. They also found species of Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas, Candida, and Serratia.

In plain English, that means there are lots of nasty germs living in those soda machines.

The bacteria appear to love the plastic tubes that send soda (and some of the bacteria) into your cup. Since customers don’t touch those tubes, the researchers believe restaurant workers with dirty hands are likely contaminating them–ironically, probably when they’re cleaning them.

The researchers tested bottled soda to use as a control group and found no contamination.

But there are plenty of other reasons to avoid those, too.

Soda has been linked to tooth decay and obesity. Even diet soda can help you pack on pounds–studies have found people who drink diet sodas actually gain weight, and may be even more prone to diabetes.

Soda has also been linked to lower calcium levels, leading to bone loss and osteoporosis.

I could go on, but I think most of us know this stuff isn’t very good for us.

Don’t replace soda with other canned or bottled drinks. I’ve been telling you quite a bit lately about the health benefits of coffee and tea, so considering brewing your own and enjoying them–hot or iced–throughout the day.

And if you want some fizz, stick to carbonated water.

Just don’t get it from a soda fountain!

Thank you, Dan Henderson, for this information.

Are You Living In A Toxic Home?

April 21st, 2010 No comments

You’ve just cleaned your house and have a good feeling that everything is clean and fresh.  Or is it?

Sorry to spoil all those warm fuzzy feelings, but you may have made your home dirtier.

Would you let your kids play with toxic chemicals?  Then why do you let your baby crawl all over a floor that has been wiped with them?  There are more dangerous things than a little juice or jelly on the floor.

Take a look at these statistics:

Over 90% of poisons exposures happen at home.

Common bleach is the #1 household chemical involve in poisoning.

Many common cleaners and even air fresheners contain organic pollutants and are 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than out.

Spend 15 minutes cleaning scale off shower walls and you could inhale three times the “acute one-hour exposure limit” for glycol ether-containing products.

Increase the risk of your kids developing asthma, the most common chronic childhood disease, by using cleaners that give off fumes linked to the risk of getting asthma.

1 in 13 school age children have asthma.  From 1980-1994, the rate of children under five increased more than 160%.

Pound for pound of body weight, children drink more water, eat more food and breathe more air than adults, making them substantially more vulnerable to chemical toxicants that are present in water, food or air.

If you have an average home in the U.S., you generate more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each hear in the form of toilet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, oven cleaners, and bleach products.

Educate yourself about what you bring into your home.

Your Life Matters

April 9th, 2010 No comments

Have you ever wondered if your life matters?  Do you make a difference?

Recently I read a little book, “The Butterfly Effect; How Your life Matters” by Andy Andrews.  It has made me think of all the ways each of us makes a difference.

In 1963, Edward Lorenz presented a hypothesis to the New York Academy of Science.  He stated that when a butterfly flaps its wings, it sets molecules of air in motion.  As those molecules move, they set other molecules of air in motion and eventually they are capable of starting a hurricane on the other side of the planet.

He was laughed out of the conference.

More than thirty years later, physics professors came to the conclusion that the butterfly effect was authentic, accurate, and viable.

This butterfly effect also applies to people.

I have been listening and reading about people who have made a difference.  It has been interesting and intriguing to see the ‘butterfly effect’ in each of their lives.

“Every single thing you do matters.  You have been created as one of a kind.  You have been created in order to make a difference.  You have within you the power to change the world.” …Andy Andrews.

You can get this little book at Simple Truths, http://www.simpletruths.com/.  It is well worth it.  I’ve bought several to share with some of my favorite people, my family.

Self Reliance

February 1st, 2010 No comments

Have you seen the YouTube video about the two people on an escalator when it suddenly stops?  Instead of walking up or down the steps, they start crying out for help.

“Somebody, anybody please help.  We’re stuck.  Hello, anybody there?”

There are two major trends of 2010:

**Health Crisis—disease care is economically non-viable

 **Economic Crisis

Shaklee is expertly positioned to take advantage of these two trends.  This means you are too, IF you choose to position yourself.

Roger Barnett, owner and CEO of Shaklee says: “We now have ‘the right stuff” to move ahead.  In Roger’s first 5 years since purchasing Shaklee, $50 million has been invested in the business!

Another reason Shaklee is right today—The American Dream.  We all have the talents and capabilities to move the dream forward for others through the vehicle of Shaklee.

There are 7 ways to earn in Shaklee.  Watch this short video presentation to learn 5 ways.

Number 6 is: the “Power of 10 Bonuses;” earn $100 for each 10 points earned in the first 90 days in Shaklee.

Number 7: The Fast Track Career Path to earning up to $100,000 in the first 15 months of being in the business.

The question isn’t “who is going to let you?”  The question is “Who is going to stop you?”  (From BYU TV)

“Somebody, anybody please help, I’m stuck.  Hello, anybody there?”

YOU are the one YOU have been waiting for.
